The Skunk Works
In 1940, Lockheed Corporation began developing a jet-engine
fighter. To build this aircraft, Clarence "Kelly" Johnson
created a "secure" work environment of packing crates and canvas
at Lockheed's Burbank, California plant. Johnson then picked his
engineers and went to work.
At the time, Al Capp's "Li'l Abner" was a premier comic strip.
The only industry in Dogpatch (Li'l Abner's hometown) was the
"Skonk Works," a business which made itself known only in a
breeze. With all the curiosity about Johnson's work in his
makeshift factory, the name was a natural and it stuck.
"Lulu Belle," the first XP-80, made its first flight on January
8, 1944, 143 days after the go-ahead. It was an immediate
success, typical of the many that would follow from Kelly
Johnson's unique Skunk Works.
